Jake Long gave West Essex a 20-14 victory as he punched in the game-winning 1-yard touchdown run in overtime at home in West Caldwell.

The touchdown was Long’s second of the night as he also had a 1-yard score on the ground in the first quarter.

Caldwell (0-2) took a 14-7 lead into halftime as Nick Mignone ran in a touchdown and Nick Moyano caught a shovel pass that he took 60 yards down the right sideline for another score.

West Essex (2-1) tied the game up in the third quarter on a 58-yard Max Garcia receiving score from Long. Garcia split two defenders down field, made the over the shoulder grab, and ran it in for the score.

After opening the season with a 34-7 loss to Passaic Valley in just its second set back since 2021, Caldwell is 0-2 for the first time since 2020 when it dropped back-to-back games to Verona and Weequahic.

West Essex has won two in a row after it downed Wayne Hills on the road a week ago, 35-14.
